Classification of activated microglia (red boxes) in the hippocampus at 3 months post-injection of PBS (top left) and human α-synuclein PFFs (top right) into the anterior olfactory nucleus.
In the low magnification view (bottom), we can readily appreciate the quantity and distribution of activated microglia (red boxes) in the ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheres of the PFF-injected mice at the level of the entorhinal cortex and posterior hippocampus.
This figure shows the classification of activated, Iba-1 positive microglia in the PBS- and PFF-injected mouse brains at 3 months post-injection. Microglia are typically non-activated and sparsely distributed in the brains of PBS control mice. In contrast, we can readily observe that the microglia are densely and extensively distributed, and often activated, in the brains of the PFF-injected mice.
